FROM HAND TO HAND

Two brand-new works were written for Anna voor de wind in close collaboration with composers Trevor Grahl and Giuliano Bracci. Works that are strongly influenced by the times in which we now live, Isolation, two-dimensional communication, constraints and distance; all of this affects who we are and the art we make. Two works that came about during complicated times.

GIULIANO BRACCI - MY VOICE IS IN MY HANDS
based on poems of Emily Dickinson (2021) 15’

Giuliano Bracci's music is fragile, rough and poetic.

Giuliano wrote My voice is in my hands for, and with, Anna voor de Wind. It is a piece inspired by Emily Dickinson’s Envelope Poems. Short poems on recycled envelopes, written during her late, most radical period. These envelopes are addressed to no one and to everyone at the same time. They remind us of our transience, vulnerability and hope.
These poems are put in a subtle theatrical space where breath, voice, sound, sign language and gestures coexist in a polyphony permeated by tension.

TREVOR GRAHL - RUKA
For bass clarinet and stop motion film (Jiri Trnka’s RUKA) (2020) 35’

This is not a fairy tale.
Dark music by Trevor Grahl, translated whispering and growling by bass clarinetist Anna voor de Wind. A unique collaboration created an unprecedentedly powerful new work.

The suppression of the artist is central in the black-comedic Ruka by animator Jiri Trnka. A man with a dream is seduced, misled and defied until there is no choice but to shatter into shards along with his dream.
